Trip Planner: Central America / Costa Rica / Province of Puntarenas / Osa Peninsula / Corcovado National Park / Carate / Corcovado National Park
Explore Corcovado National Park the largest park in Costa Rica. Established in 1975, the remote national park encompasses about a third of the country’s Osa Peninsula. Trek the pristine trails of the isolated tropical rainforest, go birdwatching and spot over 350 species of avian creatures, or admire the park’s scenic rivers, waterfalls, and oceanside beaches. Hiking in the lush national park you can spot a staggering amount of wildlife, including snakes, crocodiles, monkeys, sloths, coatis, and the endangered Baird’s tapir. Visitors need a permit and a guide to explore the park, while staying overnight in one of the base camps requires a reservation. Corcovado National Park Reviews
We took a one day trip (app. 8 hours) to Corcovado national park starting from Finca Exotica Ecolodge, passing La Leona Ranger Station. The whole track was alongside the beach , the same path there an... more »
Definitely is the last conquest remaining in Costa Rica. National Geographic does well by describing it as the most biologically intense spot in the world. I would recommend visiting Sirena area rathe... more »

Recommended, a visit to East is here, as are there fewer tourists than on the much advertised Sirena station in the South (Center), where many boats bringing groups for short trips and. A full day excursion should be but also in the East (Carate), because only the outward journey from Puerto Jimenez takes about two hours. By boat from Sierpe to Sirena takes also around two hours (with luck to see whales, dolphins and the like). Then it is left from the boat ashore, runs two hiking trails well populated hours over to the station, there if you want a lunch and an hour back to the boat. This full day tour had surprised us because it was very little jungle. For this we had only there lucky enough to see tapirs – in the jungle and on the beach. That has failed us from Carate with 14 hours - there there were Anteaters. The guide is mandatory, here you should choose a good and experienced. I highly recommend OSA trekking here. For the day trip to Sirena needed virtually nothing on equipment, the long trip from the East is more demanding but also there's water at the Ranger Station and thus surprisingly easily. The entrance from the West (Drakes Bay), I unfortunately can't say anything.
I was only able to access this national park by tour (on a boat). It’s definitely worth going with a guide as they use a telescope and you’re able to take pics of what you’re seeing through the scope lens. It’s long tour, and if you’re in the heat, it’s definitely not suitable for young children. I still enjoyed learning about all the different species of plants and animals and getting excellent pictures. I would highly recommend this tour in Drake Bay, over other land tours.
Highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. There was so much wild life. We saw tapirs, bull sharks, ant eaters, etc. Many people saw pumas but we weren't that lucky. Absolutely gorgeous beaches, our guide was amazing. She knew so much about the park and all of the animals in it. We did the 2 day tour which was a little expensive compared to other excursions but welllll worth it. We're so happy we splurged for it as it exceeded our expectations.
We went on the half day tour. If you love a close up look at animals and birds, in a fairly small area of the park, this is an ideal to go on. If you wanted a long hike through the forest, look at different options. Take a cushion for the boat journey, as it can be hard on the rear, bouncing over the waves in unpadded seats. It says a three hour walk, but it was actually five hours. As such it's better value for money, but felt a bit too long for me.
One of the most unique places in the world! This is the best park in Costa Rica to see wildlife. It opened only recently to visitors. We got there by boat from Drake Bay. If you're lucky you get to see some dolphins on the way. You can only go with a tour guide. The price of the tour is somewhat expensive, however it was worth every penny!
Unbelievable, see it. They seem to be taking great care to avoid spoiling it as well which makes me very happy.
