Chartres Cathedral, Chartres

4.7
#1 of 19 in Things to do in Chartres
Considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic cathedral architecture, Chartres Cathedral still has the majority of original stained glass windows intact, while the architecture has had only minor changes since the early 13th century. Come to venerate its most famous relic, the "Sancta Camisa," alleged to be the tunic worn by the Virgin Mary during Christ's birth.

The building's exterior is dominated by heavy flying buttresses with large the windows, while the west end is dominated by two contrasting spires: a 105 m (349 ft) plain pyramid completed in 1160 CE and a 113 m (377 ft) early 16th-century flamboyant spire on top of an older tower. Equally notable are the three façades, each adorned with hundreds of sculpted figures illustrating key theological themes. A cathedral out of the fields, at the end of the horizon, where the stopping place is oh beneficent. Take the time to visit and especially to the heart tour and discover each table carved representing one of the passages of the Gospels. And all these small candles as prayer to God. The angel who sleep outdoors is enlightening...

Montparnasse train station left at five past evening, arrive at the Chartres train station in a little over an hour. France summer sunset is almost 10, so watching the light from being described as Chartres blue stained-glass Windows from dinner. During that time it became dark and lit up first will. The next morning wake up with the sound of the Bell. Since the 12th century cathedral, its power was overwhelming.

Anne -Marie - you made the history & the architecture come alive with your tour of the cathedral & the lower church! Spine tingling! Learned so much. This is not a quick stop spot! Take the time to appreciate 900 years of history. It's a glorious place. Seeing on going restoration is so encouraging but may I suggest that there should be a portion left as evidence of times past. If you are interested in the Labyrinth ( definitely worth it if you can arrange your visit) it is uncovered on Fridays only & you want to walk it.

The cathedral is amazing. The real attraction of the city. Feel the history of the place trying to read the symbols of the sculpture and the windows. Get an audio guide if not a real guide to drive you.

A beautiful Cathedral. Entry is free. We visited end of April. Was not at all crowded. We took the audio guides in English and felt it was a bit boring! 😐 Do not miss the light projections if you visit Chartres between mid April and October.

A very beautiful Cathedra. Impressive light illuminations at night that are worth to see.

The most incredible windows you've ever experienced, each telling a story or multiple stories. The building follows. If one could only visit one cathedral in Europe it should be Chartres.
