Arc de Triomphe, Paris

4.6
#2 of 3,086 in Historic Sites in France
One of the city’s most famous monuments, Arc de Triomphe honors those who died fighting in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, and consists of four main sculptures. This location also marks the central spot where the avenues radiate out of Place de l'Étoile. See the names of French victories and generals inscribed on its inner and outer surfaces. Inside the monument, you can view a permanent exhibit conceived by artist Maurice Benayoun and architect Christophe Girault exploring the symbolism of this and other national monuments in regards to war and peace. Beneath its vault lies the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" from World War I. • I think there are a number of places in Paris, but the view from the terrace of the Arc de Triomphe is very special. Standing in the middle of the road a radial spread, like here in the center of the world and even less.

  • An architecturally amazing monument. About 200 stairs to climb from the ground to the terrace. Once you make the climb, you are greeted by the wonderful view of the city of Paris. The authorities have maintained the place well. Although, when I visited, only one cubicle in the toilet was usable. Hence, there was long queue of both men and women wanting to use the toilet. There are information boards and screens detailing the history of the monument. Ticket counter is situated below in the walkways.
  • Amazing. It's a sight to behold both from a far (you can see it from really far) as it's massive. When you get up close, you are just in awe at how large it is. Going inside is well worth it. I managed to get in on a free day (not sure why/what the occasion was) but the price would still be worth it. Inside you have to climb/descend very large spiral staircases. If you have trouble with those, you may want to take your time. The view from above is spectacular. It really is a Triumphant Arc ;)
  • A beautiful historic monument surrounded by restaurants and stores. The stores and restaurants are all expensive, so be aware. If you go there on New Year’s Eve you will be astounded at the crowd of 300,000 people and the security to get inside. They put on a light show and launch fireworks off at midnight. It ended up taking two hours of pushing through people to get to the other side of the street though. On any given day it is still a wonderful site to see.
  • Nice view of Paris at day or night. You can see Eiffel Tower which is nice at night when sparkling. There is space inside to sit and relax if you need some time after you walk up stairs. There is also souvenir shop and you can watch very nice and informative video of Arc de Triomphe history.
  • Great views and free on first Sunday of the month. Going for free made all the stairs feel worth while. My 4yr old managed the stairs alone, but once you've started up the stairs there is no easy way to turn back, so commit to carrying a kid if you do the stairs with a young one.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
