Père Lachaise Cemetery, Paris

4.4
#8 of 96 in Historic Sites in Paris
The largest cemetery in the city, Père Lachaise Cemetery contains the graves of many famous French people buried over the past 200 years. The grave sites range from simple, unadorned headstones to towering monuments, and even elaborate mini chapels dedicated to the memory of well-known people or families. Many tombs are about the size and shape of a telephone booth, with just enough space to step inside, kneel to say a prayer, and leave some flowers. Over 1 million bodies are buried here, but you can download a listing with a map that shows the grave locations for the most prominent figures. At the secret ossuary behind the Aux Morts statue, see the bones of almost 2 million Parisians from all over the city, similar to the skull and bone ossuary from the famous Paris catacombs. Visit a cemetery can do strange, yet the graveyard (huge) in Paris is the place where lie some famous personalities of each era. a couple of hours are widely enough.

It is one of the most fascinating places of Paris. Nice as a whole and in particular ... among them the graves of many famous personalities (Rossini, Bizet, Chopin, Moliere, Apollinaire, Oscar Wilde and also Edit Piaf and Jim Morrison. Interesting research with smartphone apps.

The cemetary is huge and absolutely gorgeous. We came here to visit Jim Morrison´s grave. It was not as hard to find as we thought it would be as we met a lot of people coming from the direction of the grave. It is very popular. It was beautiful to see so many people visiting this legend. Definitely worth a visit.

Every time I come to Paris, I visit this very beautiful place. the last time I came, I took a guide tour. It wasn't very expensive (as I remember maybe 20 euros), but the guide was so informative, so knowledgeable of the history, (pardon the pun), he made the place come alive. Its a beautiful, peaceful, historic and thought provoking place. There is certainly more to see than just Jim Morrison.

Very atmospheric cemetery, although there are lots of people around it is always quiet. So much more to see than just Jim Morrison. Do be aware that it is still a working cemetery, and there may be a funeral happening while you visit, so please be respectful.

It's a beautiful place and some of the graves are on Google maps (Not Oscar Wilde though). Unfortunately people keep trashing Jim Morrison's grave. It was beautiful and simple 20 years ago but now people have been chipping stones off it to take home and it's covered in graffiti. The other graves however are still beautiful.

One of the loveliest afternoons I've ever had anywhere. A gentle breeze came through, rustling the leaves in the trees that bordered many paths. Simply lovely.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
