Sainte-Chapelle, Paris

4.6
#4 of 3,076 in Historic Sites in France
Soaring stained glass windows beam a myriad of colored light onto the floor's rich tile mosaics inside Sainte-Chapelle. This house of worship is one of the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period Gothic architecture, and retains one of the most extensive collections of 13th-century stained glass anywhere in the world. Built by the French kings to house the relics of the Crown of Thorns, this "jewel box" structure has two levels and an impressive vaulted ceiling. • Everyone has advised me to after the Notre Dame certainly along Sainte-Chapelle. This because they are even more beautiful and near the Notre Dame is located. After a security check with scan we saw that entrance had to be paid and 10 euro. Notre Dame we had just visited and that is free. Given that this is a good Chapel goes it is me not worth the 10 euros.

  • The stained glass Windows are beautiful too, and the fact that they are originals from the 13th century is really impressive. But the visit is short, whereas the cost of entry. It's worth going on the first Sunday of each month, when admission is free, or combine with the Conciergerie, which is also expensive for what it shows, but at least it's something to see without paying much more expensive.

  • This compact gem is staggeringly beautiful. Was less busy than Notre Dame. Access is a short walk away, but is a bit more hidden/out-of-the-way. Doesn't take long to visit, either. Lovely little shop ...  more »

  • An amazing piece of architecture, looking really modern (open and light) for Middle Age. The interior is finely decorated, both full of patterns and unique pieces of stained glass. Guiding tours don't cost extra and are definitely worth waiting! Plan to go there on a sunny day or you'll miss the colorful ligthing from stained glasses.
  • Exquisite cathedral with one of a kind unique stained glass windows. This is a must visit for tourists in Paris, no matter what your agenda and inclination. Simply spectacular. If you're lucky, the sunny days offer even more incredible views
  • THE ARCHITECTURE IS FANTASTIC IN PARIS. THIS AREA IS FULL OF RICH NATURAL LANDSCAPE AND SCENERY. I RECOMMEND, PARIS FOR ANYONE'S NEXT TRIP TO EUROPE.
  • Beautiful stained glass windows. Excellent architecture.. It's a not to miss place when you visit Paris.
  • Stunning. Our favorite church in Paris. The windows are incredibly beautiful and tell the whole story of the Bible. The visitors literally gasped when they would enter the chapel. Well worth the price of admission.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
