Sainte-Chapelle, Paris

4.6
#4 of 3,094 in Historic Sites in France
Soaring stained glass windows beam a myriad of colored light onto the floor's rich tile mosaics inside Sainte-Chapelle. This house of worship is one of the highest achievements of the Rayonnant period Gothic architecture, and retains one of the most extensive collections of 13th-century stained glass anywhere in the world. Built by the French kings to house the relics of the Crown of Thorns, this "jewel box" structure has two levels and an impressive vaulted ceiling. • If you consider that you pay 11 or 12 € to visit Musée Rodin or Musée d'Orsay then 10 € for this chapel is heavily exaggerated. It has beautiful stained windows, painted walls and ceiling. 2 or 3 € wo...  more »
  • Sainte-Chapelle was one of the highlights of my trip to Paris years ago. The beautiful blues and other hues really stick out in my mind and pictures as extraordinary. To be able to pray here daily wou...  more »
  • I wouldn't comment on all the many wonderful places visited in Paris except that Sainte Chappelle was so amazing, and gets relatively little attention, that I felt compelled. An easy, cheap visit whil...  more »

  • Beautiful chapel. Far more impressive than Notre Dame. The 15 stained glass windows go through 15 significant stories from the Bible, from Genesis to Exodus to the Crucifixion to the Apocalypse. Definitely worth a visit, if nothing else to admire the technical artistry of the stained glass.
  • We went on a weekday with the Paris Museum Pass just before lunch. The museum pass line had no wait. Entering the first level, the glass and ceiling are beautiful with many areas to explore and things to read. The big moment is walking up the stairs in the corner to the main floor. My goodness the stained glass is massive, encompassing and each tells a unique story. Everyone has the same reaction when they walk up - just WOW! Is a must see and can easily be combined with Notre Dame in the same morning or afternoon.
  • Just remember. The Chapel is UPSTAIRS!!!. The entrance is at the ground floor. Take the stairs on your left as you enter to reach the actual Chapel
  • Very cool stained glass church. We didn't prioritize this and just popped in when we could. People seem to stay a while but we felt that 15 minutes or so was plenty to get the shots and get out and away from the mobs. Quite a dramatic building though and happy we went to shoot it!
  • Some reviewers made the mistake I nearly made... The first room you enter is the basement, not the Chapelle itself.. In good French style , no signs to tell you this though. Take the stairs at left when you enter. They take you to the actual Chapelle.. awesome !

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
