Lake Shikotsu, Chitose

4.1
Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, Lake Shikotsu represents one of Japan's deepest bodies of water, offering fine views of a still-active volcano. Formed some 30,000 years ago, the caldera doesn't freeze in the winter, despite the cold northern climate. The eastern shore features hotels and hot spring resorts for tourists, while a nearby canyon shelters rich plant life and over twenty types of moss viewable from an observation deck--an ideal destination for nature lovers. Stroll around the lake's rim or hike up the volcano and enjoy the views over the deserted crater landscape and the glimmering water. • Shikotsu Lake to be held in the mountains of White's hard winter, but also good. Go close to think's best views Where there is nothing but a little bit away, overlooking the entire half.

  • Day trip from Sapporo we took the subway then the JR to Chitose airport where I recommend to have lunch or buy gourmet food and then the bus to the Shikotsu lake . I have no idea where my husband was ...  more »
  • The Lake is huge and very beautiful to enjoy and take pictures. In winter the monstanhas to the bottom leaving the vista even more beautiful. I was in February and I took advantage of the Winter Festival, with ice sculptures and special lighting, the entry was cheap. Restaurants around. In winter it gets very cold.

  • calm, peaceful and pretty. I recommend you to go there when its nice weather otherwise water clarity won't be good.
  • Water of this lake is very pure. The transparency of water of the river is extremely high. You can see the bottom of the river as if there is no water. There is a railroad bridge which was used for transporting woods. The scenery of the lake including these artifacts is attractive.
  • Nice day out, very scenic, nice food and you can scuba dive as well, very rel axing.pedal swan boats are expensive ¥2000/€18 for 30mins.
  • the driveway to marukoma ryokan was like lake Thun in Switzerland. I would say it was the one of the best lake with a view. Not to mention, ryokan was the number 1,natural hot spring.
  • Really cool and calm in winter.
