Himeji Castle, Himeji

A World Heritage Site, Himeji Castle represents the largest structure of its kind in Japan. Constructed in the 14th century, the grandiose castle underwent several major reconstructions since then, surviving two scheduled demolitions, the 1945 bombings, and an earthquake. Admire the imposing structure from the outside, or roam the well-kept interior and labyrinthine garden paths. • Compared with other famous cities, the Himeji city is not as luxurious as Osaka city. Himeji City is not easy, is uneven road, but went up, it will feel that there is no waste of power. But the stairs in the city are very oblique and need to be noted, recommended must go to the body to feel

  • We had a fun day exploring here. There was so much history to learn about. We read up on the history before we went which added to the experience, especially since there isn’t a whole lot of informati...  more »
  • I went on a trip. Japan's largest castles. It is very powerful. I can take hours if you go up to the top of the Castle, so bring enough.

  • This Castle is a bit overrated. The exterior of the castle is beautiful and very well-preserved. Although the interior is also well preserved, it really doesn't have much to see. My recommendation is go there and just spend a good amount of time admiring the magnificent architecture of this original castle and walking through the garden and castle ground. It really is worthwhile, and well worth the visit. However, unless you are a history geek, there is no need to go in and climb to the castle top, especially when it's crowded and you have to wait in line. We were there during the new year holiday, and there was a long queue b/c they need to control the number of visitors. After waiting through the queue and going up, we concluded that it's totally not worth the wait. It would have been a 5-star attraction otherwise.
  • The castle dominates the town below and why? Because it is beautiful. Be aware that there is a lot of climbing very steep wooden stairs in order to reach the sixth level of this fortress and you will have to take your shoes off and wear slippers to preserve the wooden structure. For those wanting otherwise there is an extremely long corridor nearby where the Princess lived with her courtiers who attended to here needs. Evocative and beautiful it is definitely worth the trip.
  • Very nicely restored Japanese castle, steep steps take you up to a spectacular view of Himeji city and surrounding landscape below. There is a app available on the Japanese App Store which allows for Augmented Reality viewing of various castle features, however the app is not available to those without access to the Japanese App Store which would be a very large number of the visitors in attendance. Through your browser however you are able to scan QR codes for details aswell.
  • I visited when it was under renewal and it was quite amazing to see the traditional craftsmanship in progress and the sheer magnitude of the work. Visiting again after the renewal is complete, it’s a truly impressive and beautiful sight. It was a great experience to climb up through the castle keep and experience the grandeur and deep history that is evident in the stones, timbers and textures of the place. With a bit of imagination it transports you into another time.
  • A truly magnificent place and one of the most beautiful sights I saw in the country. The castle and the grounds are impeccably maintained and very peaceful and delightful to visit. The castle interior is mostly empty with just a few exhibits and plaques which, in my opinion, was the right balance of preserving the space without too much clutter getting in the way. Beautiful views of the city from the castle, but there's many relatively steep staircases so consider this before visiting the interior. A 15-minute walk from Himeji Station, and the walk is very pleasant with shops, restaurants, and pretty statues along the sidewalk. Truly a world treasure.
