Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, Kyoto

Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine serves as the starting point for the hiking trails, covered by densely packed vivid orange gates, that snake up the mountain behind it. This Shinto shrine devoted to Inari, the god of rice, has existed on site since 816 CE and contains several buildings and gates. Visitors hike the paths, which are covered by thousands of parallel donated "torii" gates, to reach the inner shrine halfway up the mountain. Wear comfortable shoes, and stop at the restaurants along the way to sample "abuurage" (fried tofu), considered a favorite food of foxes, the special messengers of Inari. • By far the most impressive shrine in a city of temples and shrines. Give yourself lots of time to enjoy the walk and the whole experience. Lots of interesting little detours on the way.  more »
  • Because the weather is cold and slow, I've been stranded for a while, and it's getting dark in here, unless through the lens of a single eye, it's impossible to see such a beautiful orange red with the naked eye or the phone. THOUSAND bird habitat "sure enough to see the day to fit, especially when it is good weather."

  • On Sunday a pilgrimage and because maybe, but anyway it's crowded. 2-I too was not very crowded three years ago. Like more than Japanese tourists prefer.... Torii lined background pictures while being tossed about on average in big trouble will be. Physical fitness is required as it climbs the mountain.

  • The great place and must be visited when in Kyoto. It's easy to find this historical place. Only 2 stations from Kyoto Station and it's about 5 minutes by train. Fushimi Inari is open 24 hours so it's better if you come in early morning to avoid super crowded of the tourist. The main attraction is The Tori Gates but you can also enjoy the other beautiful view by walk up to the top of mountain. It 's interesting
  • It's even better in life. Though full of everyone you can image... the place is captivating if you allow yourself to be submerged in the nature. Prepare to walk slopes, steps and dodge people. The walk continue as all the way to the top of this mountain and back around and down. You can make a pivotal point to turn back if you don't wish to home the whole trial. With tourist trap snacks to feed you all the way down and out. There are several bathroom stops all the way up. Take a snack and drinks with you, you could easily waste a day here.
  • Probably single best spot to visit in entire Japan. Impressive Shinto shrine followed by mountain filled with Tori gates. Be sure to take your time to ascend the mountain. Full loop takes about two hours. Can be visited in the evening and looks great in the night too. Entrance is free.
  • Surely one of the most beautiful attractions I have seen in my life. Placed upon a mountain, this is perfect to admire a great masterpiece in Japan as much as a great place to take a walk. Reaching the peak takes more or less one hour to come and one hour to return, awarded by a beautiful overview on the whole Kyoto. Moreover, while you take your long, spiritual walk, you can take a break at one of the seven sanctuaries as you reach the peak. Pay attention that there are no other toilets after the first break.
  • Amazing place, definitely a must see in Japan. Worth going with a small guided tour, many can be purchased for Kyoto as a whole as the history here is very interesting. The Tori gates truly are not only impressive but meditative and the entire site possesses a gentle tranquility. This, along with the hour long walk of following the whole trail up the mountain makes for quite a lovely and peaceful day.
