Ginkaku-ji Temple, Kyoto

4.3
Originally built as 15th-century shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa's retirement villa, Ginkaku-ji Temple stands as a testament to developing Higashiyama culture, of which the shogun was a patron. Admire the so-called Silver Pavilion's unfinished aspect, typical of the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which emphasizes transience. The building has survived intact through earthquakes and fires that required the reconstruction of other structures on site. While you cannot enter the pavilion, circumnavigate the temple's grounds, including a moss garden and dry sand garden, to appreciate its careful layout. Ginkaku-ji Temple is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Kyoto Edition.

  • I took the bus from downtown Kyoto. 30 minutes (depends on the traffic. ) Bus before the bus caught up I switched to. Admission is 500 yen. The philosopher's walk. Nanzen-JI is a 30-minute walk away. I think it is spicy hot time with Brook, shady, walk. Tea for Duke's spring water. Is good for history buffs. Many souvenir shops.

  • Visited temples in Kyoto (many) is what I liked most, not for the structures of the temples but the grounds. You should spend some time to contemplate every detail.
