Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kyoto

#3 of 38,127 in Things to do in Japan
Have your wishes granted at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, an independent Buddhist temple and World Heritage Site dating back to 1633. Constructed during the Heian period, the main temple and its famous stage were built without using nails. From the stage, look out onto the treetops below and the view of Kyoto in the distance. In the temple complex, drink from the three streams of the Otowa waterfall, whose waters are believed to have wish-granting powers. At the Jishu shrine to the god of love and matchmaking, try to walk between two stones with your eyes closed: those who are successful will also successfully find love. • Clean Water temple is still in renovation but the ticket to sell, people like many many a lot, the Front Street has sold a lot of food and gift shop ... The crowds were so crowded that we quickly wandered off to a very small peace palace.

  • Clear Water Temple building is shocking, if can in cherry bloom or maple tree season must more than addiction, from the two-year Hankyu and three-year Hankyu stroll to eight Hanshin shrine, is absolutely to experience the Kyoto landscape.

  • Don't go without seeing this place come to Kyoto. Take about half a day here. Especially if you come in autumn, you can get very good pictures. Superb structure. Fascinating.

  • This was undoubtedly one of my favorite temples in Kyoto. The front gates make for great photos, but the real spectacle is at the top of the hill on the mountainside. It is a bit of a hike, so plan accordingly. The view of the temple and mountainside you get at the top is definitely worth it though. Also, souvenirs here are very reasonable so stock up!
  • This place is absolutely beautiful. I visited in December and got to see all the amazing autumn colors. The food in the shrine is good, but I would recommend one of the restaurants leading to the shrine. Seating is a bit limited once you get in. It’s a very popular attraction so expect crowds
  • This was one of the top three temples I visited in Kyoto amongst dozens. The two main shrines in the front are famous and well-photographed. There is also a large pavilion in the back that is well photographed as well. Girls like to wear kimonos and pose pictures, especially true at this location. The temple is located atop a small hill and there are many shops along the way before you reach the entrance to the temple.
  • beautiful place but overly crowded.. have to queue for almost everything and you are required to hike for a distance before reaching the destination. many shops along the road up to the temple ranging from ice cream to souvenirs. tourists can even choose to rent their traditional costumes to blend in like a local. but all in all, kiyomizu is truly and eye opener.
  • Great place. It is very crowded because a lot of school kids and students. Small shop has a lot of selection for gifts which I spend a lot of money but well worth it. Staff at the small shop are super friendly. If you have a Chinese friend who can not speak Japanese or English. Do not worry, some small shop has Mandarin speaking staff.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Kyoto spoils visitors for choice when it comes to good accommodations, offering everything from traditional ryokans to luxury Western-style hotels. In a city used to receiving foreign travelers, you'll find that most establishments know exactly what to offer tourists and how to help newcomers to the area. To avoid paying premium prices during the cherry blossom season, consider staying in Osaka, located just a 30-minute train ride away. If you must stay in Kyoto itself, keep in mind that centrally located hotels charge more than those in the outer neighborhoods.
