Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Kyoto

#3 of 41,390 in Things to do in Japan
Have your wishes granted at Kiyomizu-dera Temple, an independent Buddhist temple and World Heritage Site dating back to 1633. Constructed during the Heian period, the main temple and its famous stage were built without using nails. From the stage, look out onto the treetops below and the view of Kyoto in the distance. In the temple complex, drink from the three streams of the Otowa waterfall, whose waters are believed to have wish-granting powers. At the Jishu shrine to the god of love and matchmaking, try to walk between two stones with your eyes closed: those who are successful will also successfully find love. • Advise you not to go there until the end of the restoration work. It's really a shame, but doesn't deserve that.

  • In the last year, but this year it was still under construction. Construction did not seem to have been significant progress. The construction seems to be be able to see the end of the section. If you go when the sunsets are beautiful.

  • I came here 3 third and yet I still like to visit this place. Inside the temple, surprisingly the atmosphere was so cooling after a long walk. At first I thought there is an air conditioner inside but...  more »

  • One of those beautiful temples. My favorite part is this one shrine here where you can enter into a dark room (makes you feel blind) holding on to the threads of beads for direction on one side until you get really deep inside. Feeling of being in a womb. Once you’re inside completely, a holy stone appears where you can make a wish. That’s the only dimly lit spot. But a beautiful experience overall. Wish there were fewer tourists
  • It is a beautiful shrine, with a lot of story and a lot to see! I am quite sad for not being able to look at every corner of it, since in its web page I saw different interesting locations that you can go and see... but it is really big! (Or at least it is a lot of walking). Be sure to have time so you can enjoy looking the temples, visiting the small museum which has access to like a "holy" fountain of water you can drink (I saw that in their web page), and of course, don't forget to take a lot of pictures!
  • Amazing scenery, and the street leading up to the temple was bustling with shops and tourists. It's a mix of both locals and foreigners, and definitely lots of photogenic places. It's not as crowded as other reviews say, at least in my own experience. Expect to spend around one hour there. Definitely worth a visit. A side note for people reading this review around June of 2018: the temple was under renovation when I visited in late May. A slight bummer, but I think it was still worth visiting.
  • Amazing place! The buildings are in very good conditions, the place is very clean (unnecessary to mention it since it is Japanese), there are many important and beautiful Japanese attractions. Moreover, it is considered as one of the places of World Heritage by the UNESCO. The entrance fee is 400 yens per person and you can find many souvenirs shops, restaurants and other shops just next to the entrance.
