Nara Park, Nara

4.5
#1 of 534 in Wildlife in Japan
Take a stroll among verdant trees and peaceful shrines of Nara Park, established in 1880. The park shelters relatively tame herds of sika deer, free to roam the lawns and gardens at will. Wander through groves of willows and cherry trees to spot picturesque ponds and admire numerous temples sprinkled throughout the park. The deer, although friendly, occasionally exhibit aggressive behavior in the presence of food--if you wish to feed them, purchase some rice crackers and keep your snacks away from their sight. Nara Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Nara Edition.

  • He was eager to visit this sanctuary. The Todaiji temple with great Buddha and cute deer that roam there. The complex has a Grove where there are deer, a lake and the Temple Fund. Deer go harass if they smell that you carry cookies that cost 150 yen. They are very cute, although there are some who are very heavy. The experience is incredible and you enjoy a lot. Totally recommended.

  • Nice trip to Nara park, where you can enter the famous deer and a number of beautiful shrines and temples to visit. A few hours longer if you do not.

  • One of the major reasons for visiting is to go to this park. And does not disappoint, great contact with nature and the Japanese culture. It should be respect and care with deer since they are not pets and they can attack. Recommended 100%

  • I loved Nara Park! It's much bigger than expected so there are plenty of different areas including gardens, temples, and shrines to explore, plus plenty of places to grab a bite to eat. Super laid back vibe everywhere. The deer are fun to interact with but be careful, especially with food, because they are not afraid to get aggressive and bitey.
  • Vast natural park, containing many shrines, temples and monuments relating to the old capital of Japan. What is really great about this place is there fact that you can escape city life and walk freely about the place. There are numerous small shrines to visit and a great many of them are populated by deer that have been trained by locals to bow to you in order to get treats. Seeing a bowing deer is quite a thing! It is also very accessible from Kyoto And Osaka, with great bus connections from the railway station.
  • Beautiful temple in the park. The deer are adorable and spirited at times. Was happy to see that the deer have their own space to move to when they get tired of looking at us humans. Lots of food stalls around.
  • Do you like deer? And feeding deer? And maybe petting them? Because I like deer, and it was worth the 1 hour train ride from Osaka. You can buy packs of “deer cookies” for 150yen. I’d recommend buying multiple packs, they get eaten fast.
  • It was fun but the people are a little much. Feel bad for the deer. I understand wanting to feed, pet and take a picture but I think people should behave properly and respectful before doing the three. Would like it if they limit the amount of people.
