Nara Park, Nara

4.5
#1 of 578 in Wildlife in Japan
Take a stroll among verdant trees and peaceful shrines of Nara Park, established in 1880. The park shelters relatively tame herds of sika deer, free to roam the lawns and gardens at will. Wander through groves of willows and cherry trees to spot picturesque ponds and admire numerous temples sprinkled throughout the park. The deer, although friendly, occasionally exhibit aggressive behavior in the presence of food--if you wish to feed them, purchase some rice crackers and keep your snacks away from their sight. Nara Park is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Nara Edition.

  • Who often attacked the deer were seen on TV, so little bikutsuite was truly the Messenger of God, rather human attention that is Pentecost-turned! "feeling. Calm's leisurely walking. Because people have a deer Rice cracker was soon deprived of care. And especially I'll let children and may be kinda dangerous. I'll just buy a deer Rice cracker from irrelevant bags coming in like crazy near Deer remains passed, so instead, want to get lost in the moment.

  • spend a couple of hours in the park surrounded by nature is something really nice. You just have to be careful in the summer to avoid the weekend as it fills up out of proportion by people and even friendly deer although they seem annoyed ...

  • Fantastic stop with many attractions inside. Full of tame deer to keep you entertained. Attractions include various shrines, temples and restaurants and shops. Recommend to enter from a side entrance to avoid the crowds. Only complaint is that if you do avoid the main entrance, it may take you a while before you come across a shop which sells deer feed.
  • Loved coming here and seeing the deer. They can get a bit pushy when they see you have food so be careful not to attract a large group of them. It's amazing that they bow to you so that you give them food. The scenery is lovely as well so would highly recommend giving here a visit.
  • Possibly my favourite experience in japan. It's absolutely breathtaking to be so up close and personal with so many deer. Makes for some really great photos and if you are a beginning photographer offers great open spaces with no light challenges where you can really play with the best angles to photograph these beautiful animals. Was pretty cheap to buy a pack of deer biscuits at only 150yen (they are the same price at all the in park vendors). The deer were fairly friendly but headbutted you lightly if you withheld food from them. Also one bit my sister because she wouldn't feed it. Children definately need supervising but it is pretty safe.
  • The cutest deer who bow to you to get a snack. There’s also some amazing temples in the park which are worth visiting. We took a day trip to Nara from Kyoto which takes roughly an hour by train. Although Nara is a novel experience I would say if you’re short on time to spend an extra day in Kyoto
  • Extremely unique experience and worth the day trip here! The deer can be rather aggressive... Hide food the moment you but it or you'll get chased around the park by a pack of the deer! Also, do NOT bow when the deer bow or you run the risk of getting headbutted! I had a great time here and would highly recommend the journey to Nara from Kyoto or Osaka.
