Todai-ji Temple, Nara

4.7
#1 of 172 in Things to do in Nara
A World Heritage Site dating back to 728 CE, Todai-ji Temple has served as a central Buddhist temple complex known for its administrative control over provincial temples. Today, it remains a pilgrimage and ritual site for international Buddhism. The main hall, a massive wooden building, contains a 15 m (49.2 ft) bronze statue of the Buddha flanked by bodhisattvas. Check out the onsite museum, which features rotating displays of the temple's collection of religious art and cultural artifacts. Try not to scare the deer roaming the temple grounds, as Shintoism considers them godly messengers. Planning Nara trip won't be overwheling when you use's Insprock itinerary maker.

  • This is a must visit if you’re in the area. We took a day trip from Osaka, which is only 35 mins away by train. The temple is very busy but the grounds are huge and can accommodate the crowds. The Jap...  more »
  • The ticket to see the Buddha costs ¥600 and combo that includes visit to the Museum goes for ¥1000 each adult. The temple is the largest wooden structure in the world, even being 33% less than the original construction. Although it is well great is not a visit that demands a long time. There is little internal attractions and almost nothing has an explanation in English.

  • The temple is very beautiful, there are often many visitors but I certainly recommend it as I was a tour taught me how the prayer is performed and that added to learning about the Church and religion in Japon.el Park with deer also very attractive. they are very confianzudos and ask for the cookies that are sold to feed them. They are trained to do reverence to get their treat: you have to show it to you and them "mimic".

  • This an Byodoin are my favourite temples in Japan. The size of this structure is immense. It's hard to appreciate its scale in photos. Once you begin to approach the temple, its massive scale will impress you greatly. Worth the price of entry. And the town of Nara is also pretty nice. Great place to spend a day or two.
  • Even though it was raining high, this temple is so beautiful that I could get amazing photos with it. Rebuilt twice, this temple is the house of three main Buddhas, the central one in bronze, and the other two on the sides in golden color, representing the Beginning and the End. Too bad there is very little support in English language, with all explanations only available in Japanese. Do not miss to cross the big hole on one of the columns, in order to get the best of the luck in your life.
  • A very majestic temple, you can easily spend a day there exploring the temple ground and seeing the statues or just sitting at one of the benches to soak up the atmosphere. There are a lot of souvenir shops along the way there and many deers all around. It was a good experience and definitely worth a visit if you are in the Nara area!
  • Majestic temple in Nara. One of the biggest temple seen during our Osaka Nara trip. Note the opening hours and go early as temple closes near 5pm. Best to cater a half day trip to view the shrines in Nara park and walking amongst the deers. Todaiji temple has many great Buddha and god statues.
  • A beautiful temple with a truly massive Buddha inside. We found a voluntary English speaking tour guide to tell us the story behind the temple, which makes a visit here that much better. But the best part of the temple, in my opinion, is the park it's situated in. Nara Park is a must visit and if you are here, Todai-ji is worth a visit too.

Where to stay in Nara

The historic city of Nara has a welcome number of accommodations for an urban area of its importance and popularity. Close to the main train station stand the main high-rise hotels in the city, all towering over the commercial and modern district that greets train travelers on arrival. To the east, things get a little more luxurious, with hotels close to Nara Park particularly well-appointed and rich in additional facilities. Standard hotels stand in a cluster to the southeast of the old palace ruins, while a number of pleasant, no-frills guesthouses can be found in the residential suburbs.
