Noboribetsu Bear Park, Noboribetsu

3.2
Meet the inhabitants of Noboribetsu Bear Park, an animal observation facility located at the summit of the mountain. Separated by age and sex, the 200 brown bears here have been raised in the facility, with the institution growing from a population of just eight in 1958. Head into the "cage for humans" to see the bears from their own perspective, and feed them salmon and meatballs, which you can buy on site. A museum reveals the history of brown bears on the island, their behavior in the wild, and their cultural importance to the indigenous population. • To reach the park we must use cable car from the ropeway station. I expected there is a lot of bear there with some shows, but there was a few bears only in 2 cages and the show was canceled that day....  more »
  • Man sees the bear or bears watching humans from chance or mountainous bear is not seen. Out there from the foot of the ropeway.

  • The male alpha bear is so clever! Returns the food in the pipe whenever he can't get to eat it. His growl resonates throughout the human cage!
  • Park is at the top of a hill, so you need to ride a gondola up. Gondola price is included in admission, but it was quite expensive at more than 2500 yen per person. Actual park is quite small with only two enclosures of bears (but with many bears j each enclosure). There is a somewhat run down and nondescript museum. The best part of the park is probably the view of a nearby crater lake.
  • At the end of October, all the leafs turned to golden and red. You have to take Cable car up to the bear farm, and you can see the best fall view of this little town. On top of the museum, you can see pacific!
  • Expensive. Not all that great. It's like a tiny zoo with only bears. Best part is the Gondola ride and view from the top of their building. It is funny to see all their signs saying that if you post any images of the inside of the park that they will have them removed. Probably because the conditions of the bears is pretty sad.
  • Place is a bit old and nothing much to see. Price is expensive probably due to maintenance fee of ropeway and bears. However, good experience for young children.

Where to stay in Noboribetsu

The majority of places to stay in Noboribetsu lie inland, to the north of the main train station. Close to the hot springs and the volcanic valley, accommodations lie on all the streets across the modest urban area of the resort town. Many people see staying in traditional "ryokan" (guesthouses) as part of the experience, but some more modern hotels can be found across town, too. Visitors primarily look to find an option with onsite "onsen" (traditional Japanese hot spring spas), although you can always arrange a visit to one if not.
