Trip Planner Asia  /  Japan  /  Hokkaido  /  Wakkanai

Wind Town

The northernmost city in the country, Wakkanai experiences constant exposure to the elements, with windy and snow-covered winters perhaps its main claim to fame on a national level. Trips to Wakkanai often include excursions to two of its offshore islands, both national parks, while a number of monuments and attractive coastal areas mark the shoreline of the city. The port has long been a center of fishing, so try the shellfish dishes and other local specialties during your time here. Take stress off the schedule by using our Japan vacation planner.

Where to stay in Wakkanai

Wakkanai has a good mix of accommodations, primarily located close to the two main train stations. Look out for side-street hostels providing particularly budget-friendly options, along with upmarket hotels close to the shops and restaurants of the newly developed port areas. Many visitors choose instead to stay on the islands of Rebun and Rishiri, with the two flower-covered landmasses chief among the regional highlights and possessing a good range of lodgings, including traditional ryokans with onsite onsens.
