Punta Laguna Nature Reserve, Tulum

4.5
#8 of 20 in Parks in Tulum
Nicknamed "the home of the spider monkey and the puma," Punta Laguna Nature Reserve tempts the explorer in you with its shimmering blue lagoon enclosed by a sprawling dense jungle. Declared a national protected area in 2002, the reserve represents an excellent example of sustainable tourism created and run by local communities. The 5,367 hectare (13,262 acre) grounds are home to 120 Maya villagers, many of whom maintain the reserve and offer hiking tours for those wishing to learn more about the surrounding plant and animal life. You can arrange canoeing, ziplining and water hole rappelling with your guide. Softly tread the trails of this humid jungle and you may be rewarded with a glimpse of one of the hundreds of spider or howler monkeys that live here. A visit to Punta Laguna Nature Reserve represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Tulum journey maker tool to plot your vacation.

  • I would give this a higher rating, if we hadn't found out as we pulled away that they had charged us double the price they were supposed to- this was really unfair so be warned!! You will need a guide...  more »
  • Arrived here after a great hike to the ruins of Coba, arrive there were 800 pesos for 4 people were asked (basically about €9 per person). Treating on the price we got off at 700 pesos total. At the end of the hike we bestowed upon the 100 pesos spared to tip the Guide. A spectacular experience. Walk in the jungle, with the guide which identified and made us see the spider monkeys, which would climb from tree to tree, one of them with his son. A unique show, quite far from the apes and teach that unfortunately we are used to seeing. The jungle is real, the animals are free, completely, and only thanks to the skill of driving we are unable to locate them and admire them. Soon after there was a howler monkey (which contrary to what I thought sound almost scary, like an angry lion). View the monkey (yelling because you worried that we were committed on its territory) did the ZipLine on Lake, torrential rain, who did nothing but enhance the beauty and natural place. Crossed the Lake in ZipLine, we returned to the starting point with the canoe, then let us drop always with the rope in a Cenote, perhaps the most authentic seen in 12 days. From here after bathing you climb climbing a ladder made of rope and wood, always helped by people above pulling the rope. Ends with short shaman ritual (which I also avoided). I totally recommend everyone to participate ... Reached by rental car from Playa Del Carmen

  • Really overrated. A shaman for tourists ceremony... A ride in the boat without any interest of 2 times 200 meters. 10 seconds of excitement on the zip line. At least, the monkeys were at the rendezvous! And on top of that, the reserve staff expect that everyone is showered (thanks mosquitoes) to announce that the generator is down and so the cenote is plunged into darkness. Luckily our guide Angela Rojas (excellent!) of Mexican Kan Tours reacted immediately to take us visit one another really beautiful cenote.

Where to stay in Tulum

Most accommodations in Tulum make the most of the region's scenic coastline, offering sea views and easy beach access along the coastal Route 15. This area, known as the Hotel Zone, includes everything from basic, budget-friendly "cabanas" (beach shacks) to large-scale beach resorts. For proximity to the town's famous Mayan ruins, stay at the northern end of this coastal stretch. If you want easier access to amenities and ongoing connections, look to the township itself, located a short drive from the beach.
