Sac Actun, Tulum

4.8
#3 of 13 in Nature in Tulum
Its name meaning "White Caves" in the Yucatec Maya language, Sac Actun represents an underwater cavern system near Yucatan’s Caribbean coast. Explore a part of the massive 230 km (143 mile) cave system, and visit the Sac Actun cenote. Swim in the underground freshwater basins and streams, dive in the interconnected cenotes, or snorkel to see small fish swim along the roots and vines. Admire the vast caverns, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, or try to spot the sea turtles that can be found near the opening of the cenote. • We had a lot of bad luck. We ended up in a large group of 17 people, where some were Hispanic and the rest of us English speakers. It meant that the wizard ran everything first in Spanish and then English. Our guide was not good at all, and put lots of time photographing different societies in different poses. The cave itself is amazing, but unfortunately was destroyed by the experience of there was so much anticipation and no interesting experience. I have read about others who have been virtually alone, and had the wizards really been interesting.

  • We lucked out and got to see Sac Actun on a very slow day. We had a terrific guide and thought this tour was a great value. Do go for the wetsuit, as it gets cold in the caves.  more »

Where to stay in Tulum

Most accommodations in Tulum make the most of the region's scenic coastline, offering sea views and easy beach access along the coastal Route 15. This area, known as the Hotel Zone, includes everything from basic, budget-friendly "cabanas" (beach shacks) to large-scale beach resorts. For proximity to the town's famous Mayan ruins, stay at the northern end of this coastal stretch. If you want easier access to amenities and ongoing connections, look to the township itself, located a short drive from the beach.
