Nakhal Fort, Al Batinah Governorate

4.5
#1 of 14 in Things to do in Al Batinah Governorate
Surrounded by palm trees, Nakhal Fort offers insight into the history of the region and scenic views of the plain and the town. Named after an ancient province, the site dates back to pre-Islamic times, and the 17th-century stronghold was built to protect important trading routes. The gateway and the round towers were added in the mid-19th century, and the area underwent complete renovation in 1990. See traditional furnishings and handicrafts in the rooms, as well as a collection of historical guns at the museum. The indoor seating area at the top--with oriental rugs and colorful cushions lined against the wall--offers a quiet break from the sun. You will need to climb many stairs to tour the fort. • Big fort set in an area with many date palms. Has a number of levels and shows rooms for important ruler and guests. Gives a nice view over the valley  more »
  • Beautiful fort completely restored. The best of those we visited. Nakhl means "date". And the promontory on which was built this fort is surrounded by palms. We visit all the living rooms with beautiful painted ceilings, carpets and colourful cushions. Of nice views of the city, the Palm Grove or the mountain from the many towers. A maze. Do not miss.

  • The fort holds precious weapon and potteries...located on the top of mountain and surrounded by palm trees farms.. u can spend up to 2 excited hours hunting for historical mementos.. 5 minute from famous hot water spring
  • Brilliant and the Omanis we spoke to on entering the fort were extremely welcoming and very pleasant offering us coffee and dates. It seems to be popular with several coach trips in attendance, some of which were school children. You need to be aware there are lots of steps, so not really suitable for disabled people, but we had a great day out with my daughter and grandson. My grandson loved all the steps. UK vistor.
  • If you like to visit historic places, this place could be added to your list for sure. It's a small fort as compared to the ones I've visited in India. You would need about 1 hour or less to complete your visit around the fort. It has a view of hundreds of palm trees on one side and city view on another. The fort is well maintained from inside and even has clean washrooms seperately for men and women outside. We were charged 1 rial for two persons as an entry fee. They have a decent parking area. The only reason I gave four stars was the East wing facing a pretty big trash bin outside the fort premises.
  • One of the best place to visit in Oman trip. It's little bit far from main city. You will get share taxis from barka. Neat and we'll maintained fort. It's really good place for photography lovers.
  • It is a very nice place. The antiques are placed in every room. Some of the items are very old and leaves you with ever lasting memories.
