Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanow, Warsaw

4.5
#5 of 56 in Museums in Warsaw
A symbol of Poland's royal heritage, Museum of King Jan III's Palace at Wilanow features an art collection that represents generations of collecting from the country's royal families. The museum was founded in the 19th century, but much of the artwork was taken by Nazi occupiers in World War II. However, after the war ended many of the pieces were recovered and returned, including paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and Pompeo Batoni, and artifacts from the Qing Dynasty. The main floor is a series of royal rooms with Baroque decor, marble columns, chandeliers, and polished floors. The second floor houses the portrait gallery, while artifacts and private collectibles appear throughout the palace. The site is now a branch of the National Museum in Warsaw and frequently hosts lectures, events, and temporary exhibits. The palace and museum are large, so give yourself plenty of time to tour. Consider renting an audio guide in your native language for a self-guided tour. • Went to the Royal garden light show. This palace is a little way out of the center of Warsaw about £6 by Mini cab and 20minutes travel time. We went specifically for the light show in the gardens and ...  more »
  • Nice staff. Much can be seen. Particularly exciting for history lovers. Didn't think that it is so magnificent in the building.

  • Fantastic historical building. Repaired after the wartime damage. Tours are well worth the time. Good quality paintings and furniture inside. Staff are helpful. Great location and value. Take your time if touring as there is so much to take in. Some areas do not allow flash photography.
  • This castle is amazing. we didnt go to see inside part due to the limitation of the time that we have. in my opinion, if you have more time, get the ticket and see the inside part
  • The opulence of King Jan will blow your mind. Having a lush garden and lake behind the palace is so beautiful...I cherish the memories till now...Really peace and quiet. I am sure you can get lots of Eureka moments there.
  • Long drive to a bit disappointing place. Exterior of the place itself is pretty yet the gardens are disappointing (maybe due to winter, but all the roses were cut off). Interior was doll yet provided explanations in English. Pass through, 2 hours most.
  • Fine place to spend hot weekend in the fresh atmosphere of old big garden with fountains, sculptures and historical buildings. The palace was very intriguing outside and dull and unimpressive inside. The garden was good but a bit neglected. Could be 4* but I would appreciate the custodians in the palace to speak any other language besides Polish and not stare heavily at anyone entering their assigned room suspecting something. And do not buy those audio guides- use the free application on your smartphone, the link is on the wall by the cloakroom.

Where to stay in Warsaw

Many centrally located hotels in Warsaw cater mostly to business travelers, which makes them much too expensive for backpackers and other visitors on a limited budget. Although hostels may seem like the only affordable option at the height of the season, you can find less expensive lodgings in mid-range hotels on the outskirts of town. Alternatively, time your visit for the weekend, when many hotels near the city center slash their prices and offer special deals for early booking.
