Pomnik Bohaterów Getta, Warsaw

4.4
#4 of 41 in Historic Sites in Warsaw
Erected on the spot where the first armed uprising from the Warsaw Ghetto took place, Pomnik Bohaterów Getta stands partially built of Nazi materials brought to Poland by the Germans in World War II. The decision to build the monument was made as early as 1944, but it wasn't unveiled until 1948. The figure in the middle of the central frieze represents Mordechai Anielewicz, leader of the Jewish Combat Organization, which fought against the Nazis. The figures surrounding Anielewicz are Jewish fighters armed with Molotov cocktails and guns. The monument itself, the boards at the edge of the square and the memory of the genuflection of Willy Brandt on the opposite side make this place without a doubt worth a visit. I was also at this point the Museum of the history of Polish Jews.

Lots of other places to see, it's in the middle of residential buildings. Around 20 meters of wall with not much else to see and nothing too close to it.  more »

It is only a monument. Ghetto is not nothing. You have to walk far to see small remnants of the brick wall to close the quarter. Original houses not found. No interest sculpture or artistic, just so remember and this does not need a tome of black stone.

  • Visiting these memorials with a guide who knows the history behind them is the best way experience them. The story is an emotional one, it tells of loss, despair, courage, adversity, brutality and dignity. It's an unforgettable experience, and seeing the other monuments in the near vicinity ties it all together in a narrative about WW2 and the courage of the people of Poland in the face of their enemies.
  • Best statue and good representation of jews
  • A great place and a amazing statue right in front of the gigantic Polin museum.

Where to stay in Warsaw

Many centrally located hotels in Warsaw cater mostly to business travelers, which makes them much too expensive for backpackers and other visitors on a limited budget. Although hostels may seem like the only affordable option at the height of the season, you can find less expensive lodgings in mid-range hotels on the outskirts of town. Alternatively, time your visit for the weekend, when many hotels near the city center slash their prices and offer special deals for early booking.
