Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Wroclaw

4.7
#3 of 18 in Historic Sites in Wroclaw
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist stands tall, showcasing its twin spires, its elaborate medieval portal, and the 16th-century altarpiece of the sleeping Virgin Mary. The current Gothic church was built on the site of three former buildings, with work beginning on the existing cathedral in 1244. Notice the numerous motifs and gargoyles on the exterior, which tell many legends. On the southern wall, look for the petrified head of the jeweler's apprentice, who was punished for setting fire to his master's house in an act of revenge. The interior features stained-glass windows depicting the patron saints, tombstones and epitaphs from the 14th to the 17th centuries, and the largest pipe organ in Poland. Climb the 91 m (299 ft) tower for views of the city. • The Cathedral at itself is worth a visit. Nevertheless, one should not necessarily look on Sunday past. Through services, there is not really much room for exploration - you don't want to disturb Yes. Therefore we have thrown just a short look inside that was nice. Also worth a walk from the University to the Cathedral over the two bridges and Ostrów Tumski.

  • Two beautiful towers, to which you can upload and see the sights of the city. The interior is also very nice.

  • A must see when visiting in Wrocław. A huge impression both from outside and inside. Enjoy the evening itself beautifully illuminated Ostrów Tumski enchants with its charm. With a little luck, you can hit the Lamplighter who lights up manually. The perfect place for a romantic stroll summer:)

  • I’ve seen quite a share of different cathedrals in my life, but this one impresses me every time I see it. Absolutely amazing, was the first building in Wroclaw made from the bricks, while rebuilt after Mongol invasion. You can go inside and take a closer look at everything, and don’t forget to go around it to take a look at amazing windows with mosaics. Absolutely must see in Wroclaw, you can also get to the observation point and take a look at a whole city landscape.
  • Most beautiful church in wroclaw
  • Excellent piece of Medieval sacred architecture! Like from Witcher 3 game universe, just great!
  • Nice view! There is an elevator to the view point and it's really cheap! Totally worth it
  • I recommend, one of the best cathedral I've seen in poland, even if not so huge. Very nice also the view from the top
