Housing one of the largest collections of fine art in the world, Museo Nacional del Prado is perhaps best known for works by El Greco, Goya, and Velasquez. One of the most visited cultural sites in the world, the museum includes an impressive collection of over 7,000 paintings, 1,000 sculptures, 5,000 prints, and 8,000 drawings. Though Goya is unquestionably the most extensively represented artist in this collection, other highlights include works by Titian, Rubens, Bosch, Caravaggio, Durer, and van Dyck. The main building was designed in 1785 and constructed during the reign of Carlos III, as part of a grand renewal plan meant to bestow upon the city a monumental urban space. • What about this wonderful Museum? Worth completely out of waiting to enter, which is not too heavy since the queue runs between gardens and is quite agile. Excellent organization, great visit!

  • Everyone who visit Madrid for the first time, understand or not art, should visit this museum. There is a large collection of paintings of great geniuses.

  • A mind blowing collection of amazing paintings by masters of the genre all in one place. The cafe and restaurant are reasonably priced. I recommend buying the guidebook with the entrance ticket as you will save 10 euros on buying it separately. Wear your comfiest shoes as you will need five to six hours as an absolute minimum.
  • An absolutely sprawling museum, with a stunning collection of art. If in Madrid for more than a day or two, this is one of the museums covered under the annual pass--well worth a consideration, as the entire Prado is very challenging to see in a single day. The annual pass (currently 36 Euro) also allows you to skip the line, potentially saving forty to sixty minutes' wait. Avoid starting your visit during the free hours in the early evening, as it gets very crowded in the main collection points. Depending upon your visit tendencies, plan between four and ten hours. Minus one star for the cafe--consider bottled water or a juice if you need a refresher during your visit.
  • First off I would suggest that you buy your tickets online in advance. For same day tickets the only way to buy them is to wait in a really long line with a few cashes, I could only image how long this gets at peak season. Once inside the museum is really nice, well maintained and even the food is pretty good. The art is not really my style, I find they mostly look the same, but there are some pieces that stick out and some nice sculptures. Worth a visit especially if you can avoid the line.
  • This is a must for lovers of art. I have bought "The Paseo del Arte Pass" in another big art gallery which allowed me to visit 3 top art galleries in Madrid for a better price than purchasing my tickets separately (the pass for €29). But even when you have a this pass you still need to exchange it for a ticket otherwise you wont be allowed to enter into Prado. Ask the staff, they will send you to a special queue so you wont wait ages as people without tickets. I do not recommend to come without a ticket because those queues were way too long and I guess it could take more than an hour to get in. Museo del Prado is a very big art gallery, take a free plan of the building to make a note which rooms you have already visited and where are you now for better orientation. 2 main floors plus cloister completely at the top. There was also -1floor but I was already short on time. I have spent there over 4h and haven't seen all the paintings!!! Believe me, you will be happy if you spend just few seconds for each painting because your visit of this gallery might be tiring. I definitely discourage you purchasing audioguide. Again, you will be happy to have a just a quick glance, with audioguide it would be impossible to get under 5 hours and I am not sure if this could be even tolerable for your feel, back and eyes...
  • Maybe a strange thing to say about an art museum, but it is the best-organized one I have seen. It was so easy to follow and find the pieces we really wanted to see, even during the very busy free hours (last 2 that it is open each day). Some pretty good masterworks too!

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
