Parroquia Santa María la Real de la Almudena, Madrid

4.2
#4 of 70 in Historic Sites in Madrid
The seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madrid, the massive Parroquia Santa María la Real de la Almudena serves as a splendid example of Gothic revival style. Although the Catholic Spanish monarchy moved the seat of its empire from Toledo to Madrid in 1561, this major cathedral wasn’t completed until 1993. While inside, take note of the pop-art decor and statues by contemporary artists, both of which remain unusual features among European Catholic cathedrals. Head into the crypt to see a 16th-century image of the Virgen de la Almudena. Ascend the copula for views over Madrid. The Cathedral is certainly worth a visit. Combines the sacredness of the Catholic religion to the Joie de vivre of the Spaniards, which occurs in the colors that adorn the Basilica. The entrance is free, you are prompted only a donation of €1 for the maintenance of the structure.

  • The crypt is must-see, a place with a highly recommended special magic for personal worship and that stands out artistically by not having it an only capital equal to another. Visits are free of charge, although symbolic donations are accepted. Also it is noteworthy that this place tends to be much less crowded.

  • Neo-Romanesque crypt, located in the southern façade of the Cathedral. Impressive the multitude of columns and their different capitals. Monolithic columns of the nave are more than 3 meters. A copy of the Virgin of la Almudena, but the real gem is a painting of the 13th century called the Virgin of the Flor de Lis was painted by Alfonso VI
