Plaza de Cibeles, Madrid

4.3
#19 of 1,327 in Things to do in Madrid
Visit , named for the neoclassical fountain of Ceres (or Cybele) riding in a chariot pulled by two lions. As the square is a focal point for modern architecture, look for the four large palaces on each corner--the Bank of Spain, the Palacio de Buenavista, the Palacio de Linares and the Palacio de Cibeles. The fountain is very busy with foot traffic, cars going to the city center, and Real Madrid fans celebrating the victories of their team. • This statue is in the middle of the road, it is the place where Real Madrid goes to dance and celebrate their soccer wins. It is in the middle of a pretty busy street, so it is a bit hard to cross ove...  more »
  • Another of Madrid’s beautiful squares. The architecture and statues are beautiful. We loved this square, it really takes your breathe away.  more »
  • First was a monumental fountain in representation of the Earth and fertility to beautify the city commissioned by Carlos III, then was symbol and is you gave name of square, then place of sports celebrations and finally you gave the name to the old post office building forming a monumental ensemble. Cibeles point topped the stop and it is much more than a square and its beautiful Fountain, is already a symbol of Madrid and forced photo of the passing through the city. It looks better at night, before or after visiting the Puerta de Alcalá and already carry you two heavyweights of the city.

Where to stay in Madrid

The Spanish capital is known for its array of distinct neighborhoods each with its own appeal. An affordable and easy-to-navigate metro system, which makes it is easy to get around Madrid gives you more flexibility in choosing where to stay. Perhaps the most popular choice is Puerta del Sol, the heart of the city center and one of the main tourist attractions with its numerous shops, affordable hotels, and restaurants. Close by is Gran Via street, one of the city's main arteries, which is also home to a number of hotels. A short walk from here is Plaza España where the city's most iconic landmarks lie, including the Royal Palace and the Teatro Royal. For somthing outside the traditional tourist areas, consider staying in La Latina or Malasaña, two bohemian neighborhoods that offer a wide range of eclectic shops, quaint cafes, and lively bars.
