Battery Park, New York City

#5 of 75 in Parks in New York City
At the southern tip of Manhattan, beyond the busy streets and skyscrapers, is the green urban oasis of Battery Park. The park is named after the artillery batteries once placed here as the first line of defenses during the city's early years. Today the park gives locals and visitors a chance to enjoy lush gardens, take a leisurely stroll, and admire the Statue of Liberty. Many monuments, memorials, and historical landmarks are located in the park. Don't miss Castle Clinton, the early 19th-century fort that served as the U.S. Army headquarters during the War of 1812 and later as America's first immigration station. While the park’s location on the Hudson River provides excellent views, on a windy day it can be very chilly, so bring an extra layer. • I revisited it after many years and I felt moved by your autumnal beauty. It was sad not to notice the silhouettes of the twin towers. Place of great beauty, home to many small squirrels, who didn't show up. Starting point to visit the statue of liberty and also of the (free) ferry to Staten Island.

  • I was last week at Battery Park during my trip to Liberty and Ellis Island during my trip to NYC. The Park is fairly clean and well taken care of, it certainly isn't one of the most beautiful I've seen, but it certainly isn't bad. We were at the Park almost two hours because we had to queue for boarding to Liberty and Ellis Islands Islan (we were provided with city pass-6 attractions). The Park is worth seeing, although it wouldn't be a drama if you haven't visited.

  • I visited the park in order to catch the Statue of Liberty ferry. The park was nice and clean. The scenery was beautiful, and there were plenty of vendors around to purchase snacks. I also saw some cool dance performers. There was even a large grassy area with chairs set up, so people can relax or have picnics. I wish I had a little more time to fully enjoy the park.
  • Nice place to hangout on a weekend. The day we visited was perfect as far as the weather is concerned, no rain even though cloudy to keep the temp down. Lots of street food carts around to eat out and just chill in the park. Wanted to go to liberty Island but the queue was more than 1+ hrs wait so had to skip it. If planing to take the cruse to Statue of Liberty then plan to reach early in the morning (will say by 9 AM).
