Battery Park, New York City

4.2
#5 of 58 in Parks in New York City
At the southern tip of Manhattan, beyond the busy streets and skyscrapers, is the green urban oasis of Battery Park. The park is named after the artillery batteries once placed here as the first line of defenses during the city's early years. Today the park gives locals and visitors a chance to enjoy lush gardens, take a leisurely stroll, and admire the Statue of Liberty. Many monuments, memorials, and historical landmarks are located in the park. Don't miss Castle Clinton, the early 19th-century fort that served as the U.S. Army headquarters during the War of 1812 and later as America's first immigration station. While the park’s location on the Hudson River provides excellent views, on a windy day it can be very chilly, so bring an extra layer. • Stopped here for a 30mins during a tour of the city. Views of Ellis Island and the statue of liberty are amazing so that alone makes it worth the time. We where there around 10 in the morning in Janua...  more »
  • Walking around the Battery Park. It is a good atmosphere. Battery Park is located to the South of Manhattan island. And in the Battery Park ferry terminal. I went to Liberty Island with the Statue of Liberty. By the way, see the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park. Also there were US Navy soldiers Memorial Park in there were performers with the appearance of the Statue of Liberty. It is a very good atmosphere. For a good Battery Park I think. We recommend.

  • Sunday night at 9 went close to the popular, but liberty island seemed far away in the darkness. Goddess of the other side of the fence was thinking while listening to the sound of the waves lapping the shore.

  • We love New York City! So many things to do and see. Battery Park is a pretty large area on the southern tip of Manhattan island. There is a walk along the river with beautiful views of New Jersey, the statue of liberty and Brooklyn. There are many varieties of flowers they have planted along the paths. They have so much to do there you're better off taking a stroll yourself and see what interests you, I'm sure there will be something you'll enjoy!
  • I think many people forget that New York City was originally a seaside community while it started that way take the Easter population in the history of oysters in Manhattan as a great example you should look it up. Battery park is so fabulous destination for tourists and locals alike because of the unique architecture and the fact that you can walk around the island and see many different vantage points including the statue of liberty Ellis island and parts of Brooklyn and New Jersey that depending on the time of day are spectacular they sparkle and now the seaside community is growing even larger and stronger especially since hurricane Sandy. There are small museums and sculptures throughout downtown battery park and I encourage you to pay attention to the details because you might just miss something spectacular. From Cemeteries to Wall Street to Bodega's and more it's worth spending time in battery park. but please do not drive down there expecting to park - there is absolutely no parking during the week you will get a ticket and you will hold people back there is one massive parking lot at the end of battery park that is relatively expensive, but be prepared to walk as well.
  • Heritage is beautiful and quite preserved. What surprises me most was the cleanliness and hygiene of the place. It really is a place for all ages and taking in a beautiful view of other local heritage sites. Congratulations on providing such careful service that the rulers and local people have.
  • Some of the best views in the city. Historic New York harbor is a must see site for anybody visiting New York or even New Yorkers themselves who have never made the trip. With views of lady liberty and the stunning Jersey City skyline you really get a feeling for the significance of the area when you stand at the battery. Go in the spring or summer when there's activities for younger kids and the whole family. It's also quite easy for tourists to navigate to as battery Park stands right by the last stop (south ferry) on the one line. Just catch the 1 at times square and ride downtown to the end and you're there!
  • Great green space at the foot of the Financial District. Great views looking out to sea along the promenade. Down side are the people harassing you to buy tickets for the Statue of Liberty. Memorial stones for the military also worth a visit. Like all the parks I visited, food vendors are present, so you grab a bite to eat and something to drink, and have either on a park bench and watch the world go by, or on the go. At the foot of Battery Park are the boats to take you to Liberty Island for the Statue of Liberty, and a few yards along the promenade, is the Terminus for the Staten Island Ferry. Great place to watch the sun set.
