Pike Place Market, Seattle

4.3
#1 of 34 in Shopping in Seattle
Built in 1907 on the edge of a steep hill in the downtown waterfront area, Pike Place Market remains one of the country's oldest continuously operating public farmers' markets. A regular place of business for local farmers, craftspeople, and merchants, the market also ranks as one of the city's top tourist attractions. Consisting of a main level and several lower sections, the market features a range of flower stalls, comic-book stores, antiques shops, and family-owned restaurants. Before you explore the areas below street level, visit the main market's fresh produce and fish stalls. Access the market by car, public bus, or streetcar. • Great place to visit. Can easily spend a full afternoon there. Many restaurants there too as well as vendors selling everything from records to seafood, meat and produce!  more »
  • The first Starbucks. The Gum Wall. Shopping/arts and crafts/food vendors. Food. It’s crowded but we were there Christmas week so to be expected. We used parking garages because street parking was hard...  more »
  • Sure, the place is expensive but at the same time, very exciting. Fish counter has become a spectacle with fish traders as putting on a show and throw fish between them. In a tunnel, people have printed the walls full of gum so that the disgusting almost becomes art. On the rooftop you will find a "hidden" urban garden with a dispute. A metal pig has become a fotoattraktion. A delightful eclectic place.

Where to stay in Seattle

Famous for its architecture, Seattle's downtown area features a range of lodging options, including high-end hotels offering expensive rooms with views over Elliott Bay. Remember that despite their prices, many hotels in this waterfront district provide rather small rooms. If you need more space but don't want to break the bank, head out of downtown to some of the city's outlying neighborhoods. Seattle's diverse suburbs offer affordable bed and breakfasts, providing you with all the comforts of home and allowing you to see what local life is really like.
