#12 of 35 in Parks in Seattle
Explore greenhouses with environments ranging from jungle to desert when you visit Volunteer Park Conservatory. You'll tour five houses, each representing their own distinct environment. Walk through the bromeliads house to see an array of plants that attach themselves to surfaces like rocks or branches. Head to the fern house to see all types of ferns and carnivorous plants, like the Venus fly trap. Tropical plants reign at the palms house and the opposite is true at the cacti and succulent house, which promotes desert plant life. Don't miss the seasonal house, which rotates the plants it features based on the time of year. • So happy to have had an opportunity to visit this beautiful place on a January visit to Seattle from sub-zero temps in Maine. The orchids and cactus were stunning, and the climate a delightful change....  more »
  • The Conservatory displays, in a heat controlled environment, displays a number of exotic plants. I particularly appreciate the orchids. There are many other plants, ferns and bulbs.  more »
  • We were shocked when we found the Seattle Conservatory because of the beauty of the architecture and the flowers within. You won't find crowds there because it is off the beaten path.  more »

  • This place is so cool to come to in winter. Snow on the ground, tropical inside. The people here do a wonderful job of balancing the indoor space with he outdoor space. I like that the building is small, but it it's still there with a very neat display of many plants we just don't get to know about on a regular day. The seasonal display is very cool, this time it's the Christmas train! Thanks to all who make this happen!
  • Great little conservatory that has a surprising amounts and variety of plants packed into its layout. Parking isn't a problem and it generally doesn't seem to be too packed with other people to the point where you might feel rushed. At the time I went they have a cactus and succulent, palm, fern, and bromeliad room. Adult prices are 4 dollars for a day pass. Enjoy this wonderful experience on a cold and rainy day, because inside the conservatory it's nice and warm!
  • The Volunteer Conservatory is a affordable retreat from Seattle's gloomy weather. Wether you'd like to dry out in the Cactus Room, warm up in the Fern House or see something new in the Seasonal Room there is something that will fit your mood. Rotating exhibitions make this a destination to visit again and again. After spending time in here, you are guaranteed to feel relaxed and rejuvenated. A great first date spot or place to take visiting guests!
  • Absolutely love this conservatory! It's always wonderfully maintained and operated by the kindest people. I highly recommend it on a rainy day, since the 70 degree temperature inside is a welcome change to a Seattle winter. Admission is free on the first Wednesday and Saturday of the month, which is another amazing perk!
  • A cute observatory with colourful flowers and nice succulents. I went on a weekend with free admission, though regular admission is around $4.

Where to stay in Seattle

Famous for its architecture, Seattle's downtown area features a range of lodging options, including high-end hotels offering expensive rooms with views over Elliott Bay. Remember that despite their prices, many hotels in this waterfront district provide rather small rooms. If you need more space but don't want to break the bank, head out of downtown to some of the city's outlying neighborhoods. Seattle's diverse suburbs offer affordable bed and breakfasts, providing you with all the comforts of home and allowing you to see what local life is really like.
